Discover the Amazing Burnt City!

Shahr-e Sukhteh — the 5,000-year-old Burnt City — gave the world its first animation, its oldest artificial eye, and a peaceful, ingenious civilization kids will want to meet.

Imagine a bustling city from over 5,000 years ago — that's Shahr-e Sukhteh, also called the Burnt City, in ancient Iran. This incredible Bronze Age settlement thrived around 3200 to 2300 BC and shows us how smart and creative people were long ago.

Archaeologists have found many wonderful things there that make kids go "Wow!" They discovered the world's oldest artificial eye — a beautiful prosthetic made with gold details, worn by a tall woman almost 5,000 years ago. There's also evidence of early brain surgery on a young girl's skull, proving ancient doctors were skilled and caring.

Kids especially love the world's first animation! An earthen goblet shows a goat jumping toward a tree in different positions — when you spin it, it looks like a moving cartoon from 5,000 years ago.

The people of the Burnt City were great artisans who made lovely pottery, jewelry, and crafts. They built monumental buildings and showed strong accounting capabilities with seals and tokens to keep track of trade and goods. The city had organized neighborhoods for living, working, and burying the dead.

Interestingly, no weapons of war have been found, suggesting a peaceful and advanced society focused on creativity and daily life.

Learning about the Burnt City helps kids see that Iran has a super long and brilliant history full of invention, medicine, art, and smart thinking. It sparks curiosity, builds pride in our heritage, and shows that humans have always been clever problem-solvers!
